Suffering from Acid Reflux?
Sky Ridge Medical Center offers a variety of procedures to treat your acid reflux.
Sam Martin had been suffering from reflux for more than 10 years when he came to see Dr. John Weaver. “I was sleeping upright in a chair to prevent fluid from refluxing into my mouth at night. I had tried a lot of acid reducing pills, eating a bland diet and drinking only water. My refIux was terrible, and I was miserable,” Sam stated. “Now, after my anti- reflux surgery, I am off of my Nexium, and I am able to sleep lying down without reflux. Anti-reflux surgery with Dr. Weaver changed my life.”
An estimated 30-40% of Americans suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Reflux can present with a variety of symptoms including heartburn, a sour, acidic taste in your mouth, voice changes and chronic cough. Severe reflux can even cause symptoms such as chest pain, swallowing difficulty and worsening respiratory problems.
Over the counter reflux medications can help alleviate some of the symptoms, but do not solve the underlying problem. The ongoing reflux can eventually cause damage to the lining of your esophagus (Barrett’s Esophagus) and pre-dispose you to esophageal cancer. Early detection and treatment is key to minimizing your risk of cancer.
Treatment options for GERD
The gastroesophageal reflux center at Sky Ridge Medical Center offers the treatment options that you need. Dr. John Weaver is a minimally invasive surgeon who specializes in the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. “Most patients are candidates for one of the minimally invasive techniques that we use at Sky Ridge,” says Dr. Weaver. “We perform both endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques as well as being one of the few centers in Colorado to offer the Linx procedure. The Linx procedure is performed by placing a magnetic ring around the base of the esophagus to prevent reflux.
